So you think your children learn to spell in Kindergarten or First Grade, right? Not at all. It is at a much earlier age. The age when you think they just aren't capable of knowing what you are discussing and heaven forbid you start spelling words. Spelling out words sends up a radar that something "good" is about to go down. Ears peak and are honed in to your every word.
For instance:
Emily came to pick Lidia and Sawyer up after work Monday night. I was filling her in on what they had eaten during the day and I explained that Lidia had only eaten just a little dinner, not much at all and that she may want to offer her something when she gets home.
Lidia picks up on this stuff very well. So, she starting asking for a snack, since she had "ate all my dinner". I was going to cave in and give her a little snack. You know, that's what LaLa's do. I opened the drawer where I keep candy and was going to give her a jelly bean. Emily immediately said, "No don't give her any of that, she won't go to sleep tonight." So as not to fuel Lidia's obsession with snacks (she knows I usually have chocolate in there), I started to spell out the goodies to Emily. I said, "I don't have any c.h.o.c.o.l.a.t.e. just j.e.l.l.y.b.e.a.n.s. Emily said, "Still, I don't want her to have that because she will have a sugar high and not go to sleep. Of course, Lidia started to protest. Well, I had to try to get Lidia something to satisfy her so I asked Emily if she had any i.c.e.c.r.e.a.m. at home. She then told Lidia that she had some Yogurt at home and that she could have that as a snack. Well our little "spelling bee" just had to get her two cents in and prove that she can spell too.
Lidia then said, "But I wanted some C.U.R."
