Whitney, The Devil Cat and The Jehovah's Witness

You know animals are amazing creatures. Most are so cute and it is so neat to watch their personalities come out. Saturday, we took Lidia and Sawyer to the zoo in Columbia. We have been telling Lidia about the monkeys and how much noise they make first thing in the mornings. Sure enough they were making a huge racket when we got there. Braving the light rain, we stood right out there listening to them for a good ten minutes. Lidia was mesmorized. We had a good day in spite of the rain, but headed home a little earlier than I thought because of it.

On the way home, I remembered a story Whitney told me that happend to her last week. But first, you have to know the history behind her roomates cat. This cat is an attack cat. She sneeks around watching for you to walk by and then pounces on your feet and begins to just tear them up. Whitney has been threatening to let the cat out of the house (accidentally of course) so it will run away. She dubbed it "THE DEVIL CAT".

Well little did she know what was in store for her this particular day. There was a knock on the door and Whitney went to answer it. She was a little leery, so she peeked through the key hole and saw that standing on the other side was a Jehovah's Witness. "What do I do now?", she thought. "This person saw me come to the door, I can't just ignore it." "Man, I don't want to have to listen to the Jehovah's Witness". So reluctantly, Whitney opened the door and then what she had been praying for happened. THE DEVIL CAT flew out the door and was headed down the street (accidentally of course)! "Oh Lord, this is not happening!" Whitney politely told the Jehovah's Witness, "Excuse Me" and ran past him to chase the cat. THE DEVIL CAT saved her from the Jehovah's Witness.

Spelling Bee Lidia

So you think your children learn to spell in Kindergarten or First Grade, right? Not at all. It is at a much earlier age. The age when you think they just aren't capable of knowing what you are discussing and heaven forbid you start spelling words. Spelling out words sends up a radar that something "good" is about to go down. Ears peak and are honed in to your every word.

For instance:
Emily came to pick Lidia and Sawyer up after work Monday night. I was filling her in on what they had eaten during the day and I explained that Lidia had only eaten just a little dinner, not much at all and that she may want to offer her something when she gets home.

Lidia picks up on this stuff very well. So, she starting asking for a snack, since she had "ate all my dinner". I was going to cave in and give her a little snack. You know, that's what LaLa's do. I opened the drawer where I keep candy and was going to give her a jelly bean. Emily immediately said, "No don't give her any of that, she won't go to sleep tonight." So as not to fuel Lidia's obsession with snacks (she knows I usually have chocolate in there), I started to spell out the goodies to Emily. I said, "I don't have any c.h.o.c.o.l.a.t.e. just j.e.l.l.y.b.e.a.n.s. Emily said, "Still, I don't want her to have that because she will have a sugar high and not go to sleep. Of course, Lidia started to protest. Well, I had to try to get Lidia something to satisfy her so I asked Emily if she had any i.c.e.c.r.e.a.m. at home. She then told Lidia that she had some Yogurt at home and that she could have that as a snack. Well our little "spelling bee" just had to get her two cents in and prove that she can spell too.

Lidia then said, "But I wanted some C.U.R."

Beetles and The American Idol

Emily told me this story:

Last Saturday, Emily and Sawyer was sitting on the porch while Lidia played in the yard. Lidia spied a bug in the grass and asked Emily what it was. Emily told her that it was a beetle. Lidia wanted to know if it was a "Mommy" beetle and Emily told her yes. Then Lidia heard a bug noise and told Emily that it was the "Baby" beetle calling it's Mommy. Emily agreed with her. Then Lidia came over to Emily on the porch and saw a beetle just lying on the steps. Lidia said, "Look the Daddy beetle is dead"! That was a good laugh, but didn't end there.

Emily started questioning Lidia about what she thought "dead" meant and who told her. Lidia told her that it meant to go away. That's pretty good for a 3-year-old. So Emily asked Lidia who told her that. Lidia said, "Mommy" and Emily said no that she didn't tell her and asked again. Lidia said, "Lidia". Then Emily said no again and asked, "Did LaLa tell you what being dead meant?" That's who Emily believed told Lidia because she says that I am always telling her strange stuff. Lidia said, "No, LaLa says 'American Idol' Is Coming Up Next."

Girl Monkeys

Some children will eat anything, but not Lidia. You have to give her a choice. It can be from the same box, but a few choices none the less.

Case and point......This morning I offered to fix Lidia some breakfast and after offering her several things, I mentioned the Fruit and Cream oatmeal that she likes. "OK", she said. So I pulled out the box only to find that she had already eaten all of the Strawberries & Cream and Blueberries & Cream. They were her favorites. So I told her that we only had Peaches & Cream or Bananas & Cream left. I could see her pondering the choices I gave her. This could be good or it could be bad. I'm thinking, please be a good thing, please be a good thing......and then she tells me........

Oh, I need to make myself a mental note here to contact the Quaker Oatmeal people because apparently they don't know that the Bananas & Cream oatmeal is for "Girl Monkeys".

Cowgirl Lidia

Ropes. They have lots of uses and come in mighty handy sometimes. But, it takes the imagination of a 3-year-old to come up with the best.

Cliff and Lidia were outside one afternoon last week and while Cliff was busy working on something, Lidia was playing with a 3 ft. piece of rope he had given to her about a week or so before. She had been trying to jump rope with it. You know the normal little girl's games. But this child's imagination runs rampant sometimes, so it is no surprise that the piece of rope was conjuring up all sorts of things she could do with it. I was checking on Sawyer who was napping at the time and was walking back and forth from the bedroom to the back door. I kept peeking outside to see what Lidia was up to and just so happen to look outside at the same time she tore off running across the backyard. She was headed straight for the barn and horse pasture. I immediately went into alarm mode! All I could think of was that she was going to run in to the pasture, scare Sissy and get the life kicked out of her. So, I jerked opened the back door to yell for her to come back and at the same time heard Cliff yelling for her too. Nothing was slowing this little thing down. So, Cliff took off running after her. He had a little bit of a hard time catching up to her too, but made it to the edge of the pasture just as she did, thank goodness. Cliff scooped her up and lingered out there for just a couple of minutes. Then at last, I saw them walking back up to the house.

I asked, "What was that all about?" Cliff said, "She was just going to lasso the horses."

Happy Birthday Whitney

This story is about Whitney. Everyone should have a Whitney. They keep you on your toes, they keep you accountable to all the stuff you teach them as they grow up, they can put you in your place and they make you laugh like crazy sometimes. With Whitney, you just never know.

As a child, Whitney would come up with the most unusual, funniest observations and stunts of any child I have ever known. I once heard such an awful cry coming from Emily who was in the bedroom playing with Whitney at the time. I ran to see what was wrong and she fell on me crying. Finally, I got out of her what the problem was. At just 2 years old, Whitney had told her sister, "You are adopted!" Good Lord, we have a live one here - were my first thoughts. It took me a few minutes to convince Emily that I was there when she was born, that I was the one that gave birth to her.

Then there was the time that we were having Quail for dinner....We noticed Whitney just looking at hers, not eating of course. Then it all became clear....She hollered out, "OOOOH, I'm not eating this, mine has toenails." This reminds me of the time she laid 3 of her fingers on the kitchen counter, looked up at me and said, "Look, it's E.T."

Another time Whitney came up with a very good analogy of a peanut butter sandwich. She took a bite off each corner of the sandwich, laid it down, looked at it a few minutes, then proclaimed, "Look, it's a square meal." Oh, and did you know that one of the best ways to cool spaghetti is to pour tea on it?

Let's not forget the time she locked me out of the house. I went out the back door for something and turned around to go inside to find Whitney standing at the screen door. She asked, "What would you do if I locked you out of the house?" I told her that I would go to the front door and ring the bell until her daddy let me in and then she would get a spanking. Well, all I can say is that if you are going to make threats, be prepared to follow up on them. Yes, Whitney locked me out of the house and just stood there laughing at me. And of course, all I could do was stand there and laugh too. By the way, ask Cliff how many times he got caught outside in his underwear and had the porch light turned on.

One of the more important pieces of advice I can give you is no matter how much they beg and plead do not lock yourself up in a dark bathroom with that child, look into a mirror and call on any ghost to appear. This will back fire on you every time. I'm telling you don't do it.

There was the time that anyone who passed by our house on Rosemary Ave. knew exactly who lived there because Whitney wrote my name on the front of the house with chalk, big as day. And of course, there was the time we had gone to the mountains with Earl and Lynn and Robert and Shea for our yearly weekend trip. We were all settling down for the night, getting showers, sitting around talking...that kind of thing. Earl had gone to take a shower and came out of the bathroom laughing his head off. He let everyone know that I had written my name on the mirror in the bathroom and when the mirror fogged up he saw it. Yep, you guessed it....Whitney was at it again. This same weekend and probably the same night Earl saw someone in the bedroom getting ready to jump from the top bunk to the bed on the other side of the room. We heard Earl say, "No, Whitney, you can't do that!" Tripp started laughing and said, "She already did!"

Not only is Whitney funny, but she is a very determined young lady. She had wanted a horse from the time she was old enough to know what a horse was. Driving by a field with horses you could see her little nose pressed to the window and hear her saying, "I want a horse." Her dream came true when she was around 13 yrs. old. She got her first horse. She began learning to ride and then decided she wanted to show her horse English style because that was what most of the little girls at the "Barn" were doing. So, she began learning as much as she could by watching the other girls. She would ask questions and practice as much as she could. She never had a formal riding lesson, but somehow made her horse do just what she was supposed to. Whitney started entering classes in English shows and began to win some and by the time she became too old to enter the youth classes anymore had become quite accomplished. In Whitney's last show, she entered 6 classes and won First Place in all 6.

As she grew older, Whitney went from "Sissy" her quarter horse to horses under the hood, high school and a social life. Whitney is at the University of South Carolina right now and determined that one day she is going to be a Pharmacist. She has matured quite a bit since she began pulling her little stunts that began at 2 years old. Still pulling them....she's just a little more clever and mature about them now. And you know the one fear that all parents have....getting that dreaded phone call in the middle of the night..... Well, we got a call last night. Cliff and I were already in bed. I was asleep but heard Cliff jump up out of bed, then I heard my cell phone ringing. Half asleep, I was wondering who in the world would be calling at 12:15 in the morning and on my cell phone at that. Cliff brought the phone to me in bed. Cautiously, I said hello. Then I heard the words......"MAMA, I'M LEGAL!"

Today, March 19th, Whitney turns 21. Happy Birthday, Whitney!

Whitney, Daddy and I love you and are so proud of you. Your determination is going to carry you far. Stick to your goals. We have no doubt that you will get out of life just what you want. Always keep your witty personality because you remember that laughing is one of my favorite things to do. The Lord knew I would need you.

Happy 21st Birthday!

Happy Birthday Emily

Boy do children grow up fast. It doesn't seem like it has been 24 years ago that Emily came into our lives. She had a rocky start, but came out on top.

Did I ever tell you the story of how she got her name? Ellen and I found out we were pregnant almost at the same time. We used to talk on the phone about it and one day I shared with her the thought that I just didn't think I could have this baby. Little did I know what was ahead. I began to have dreams of things about the baby and troubles that we were having. I dreamed that I couldn't have her. I dreamed that after she was born that I couldn't get her to eat. And in another of my dreams, Mama had come to visit us while we were staying with Mrs. Wanda. She came into the bedroom where I was and I held up the baby to her and told her "Mama, this is our little Emily." I got her name from my dreams. Amazing, huh? In this same dream I actually saw what Emily looked like. I believe now that these dreams were the Lords way of preparing me for what was ahead.

On March 15th, we got a call that Ellen had gone into labor and was in the hospital. That same night I went into labor too. Cliff was on evening shift and was just leaving for work. I had that feeling, so I told him to stay close to the phone. Sure enough, less than an hour later, I knew I was in labor. We were staying with Mrs. Wanda and Mr. Clifford. I went into her room and called her name and immediately she sat up in bed and said, "I'm ready." We called Cliff, the doctor, Mama and so forth. By 1 a.m. we were well on our way to Charleston. To make a long story short, I was in labor at least 16 hours when Dr. Pruitt came in and suggested we take some x-rays. Turns out that I couldn't dilate past 2 centimeters. My pelvis was just to small to have this baby. So he explained that we needed to do a C-section. (First dream, coming true). March 16th - I had the section and when I was in recovery the nurse that was trying to wake me up kept asking, "Mrs. Cox, do you know that you had a girl?" When I finally woke up enough to comprehend what she was saying, I asked "Did they cut her?" That was my main concern at the time. The nurse, kind of dumb-founded by my question said, "No, I don't think so." When they brought her to me later and I laid my eyes on her all I could do was drop my mouth open. I had seen this baby before! Then I remembered....I saw her in my dreams. She looked exactly like in my dreams! Oh man, this was getting crazy. That was a long night y'all. The next morning, the doctor came in and told me there was a problem. As he was explaining to me that there was some kind of blockage and that they needed to send her to MUSC to find out what, I began to have what I felt like was an outer body experience. He asked me if there was anyone he could call. I got Cliff on the phone and remember telling him that the doctor wanted to talk to him and not to drive too fast. As the doctor was explaining the situation to him, still having that outer body feeling, I saw someone appear behind the doctor. As I looked on, with my mouth wide open at this point, I knew who it was. I am telling you the truth. It was Jesus! I saw Him in a white robe with a glowing light behind Him. And when He spoke to me, I instantly became calm. He told me, "You don't have to worry, everything is going to be okay." Then He was gone. From that moment on and for all that we went through, I didn't worry. Because I knew and believed just what Jesus had told me. You all know that Emily was born with TE Fistula and had an operation at 2-days-old. The next 2 weeks were a blur - going back and forth to the hospital. But then we got to bring her home. I was determined to nurse her. I had pumped the whole 2 weeks prior. But by this time she was so used to the nipple from the hospital that I had problems getting her to nurse. (Another dream came true!)

From that time forward, she continued to improve. We had our ups and downs, feeding tubes coming out, having to hold her up for one hour after she ate, all the times she got food hung at the site where they had to sew her esophagus back together, etc. But she did continue to improve. And today, you wouldn't even know that she went through all of that unless you saw her battle scars.

She is a strong girl, that Emily. She has always known what she wanted and didn't stand still until she got it. She is so smart and compassionate. Nursing was what she was created for, I believe. Not to mention giving me my two wonderful grandchildren. Cliff and I are so proud of her and all that she has accomplished in her short 24 years. And through everything, I have always relied on that promise made to me 24 years ago...."Don't worry, everything is going to be okay.!"

Emily - Your daddy and I wish for you all the peace, joy and love that you can possibly stand. We hope that your future with your family is as wonderful as ours has been. We love you. Happy Birthday!
